Precose Acarbose for Type 2 Diabetes Meal-Time Glucose Control

Precose contains acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor prescribed as part of a type 2 diabetes management plan. It slows the digestion of complex carbohydrates in the intestine, reducing the rise in blood glucose after meals. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines such as metformin, insulin, or a sulfonylurea when a clinician determines it is appropriate. Precose does not replace meal planning, physical activity, blood-glucose monitoring, or regular diabetes review. Precose price may vary by strength, supply, pharmacy, and insurance coverage, but cost must never lead to unsupervised dose changes or treatment interruption.

Diabetes treatment is individualized. Infection, injury, surgery, vomiting, dehydration, major dietary change, missed meals, stress, alcohol use, and changes in activity can affect glucose control and may require instructions from the diabetes team. Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain with dehydration, or signs of diabetic ketoacidosis such as severe nausea, deep rapid breathing, or unusual drowsiness.

Indications

Precose is indicated to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It is not a treatment for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. The medicine addresses post-meal glucose excursions; it does not guarantee prevention of long-term diabetes complications. Patients should buy Precose only with a valid prescription after their clinician has reviewed diabetes type, glucose results, liver status, bowel history, diet, and all medicines.

It should not be used in cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulceration, partial intestinal obstruction, predisposition to intestinal obstruction, or chronic intestinal disease with marked digestion or absorption problems. Conditions that could worsen with increased intestinal gas also require careful clinical consideration. Obtain it from a regulated pharmacy that can provide the correct strength and pharmacist counseling.

Dosage

Take Precose with the first bite of each main meal, exactly as prescribed. Acarbose tablets are available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg strengths. A common starting regimen is 25 mg three times daily, sometimes introduced more gradually to reduce gastrointestinal effects, followed by clinician-directed adjustment based on post-meal glucose, glycated hemoglobin, body weight, and tolerance. Patients with a valid prescription can buy Precose 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg only when the strength and meal-time regimen match the written directions.

Do not take acarbose between meals, do not make up a missed dose with extra tablets, and do not change the dose because of a single high or low reading. If a meal is skipped, ask the diabetes team how the full medicine plan should be handled. Precose price may differ by strength, but tablets should not be substituted or the dose altered without a prescriber's approval. Continue diabetes appointments and laboratory monitoring, including liver tests when clinically indicated.

Safety Information

Gas, abdominal discomfort, bloating, diarrhea, and soft stools are common, especially early in treatment or after consuming more carbohydrate than planned. Persistent severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation with inability to pass stool or gas, vomiting, blood in stool, or signs of bowel obstruction require prompt medical review. Seek urgent help for hives, swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, severe rash, dark urine, pale stools, jaundice, reduced appetite with ongoing nausea, or severe fatigue.

Precose alone usually does not cause hypoglycemia. However, the risk rises when it is combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea, when meals are delayed or missed, during prolonged exercise, or after alcohol use. Symptoms include hunger, sweating, trembling, fast heartbeat, headache, dizziness, confusion, weakness, blurred vision, seizure, or loss of consciousness. Treat mild or moderate low blood sugar with oral glucose or dextrose, not ordinary table sugar or candy containing sucrose, because acarbose delays sucrose breakdown. Severe hypoglycemia needs emergency care and may require glucagon or intravenous glucose.

Patients who buy Precose should keep an appropriate source of glucose available, teach close contacts how to respond to severe hypoglycemia, and tell their clinician about liver disease, bowel disease, surgery, alcohol use, and all diabetes medicines. Cost must not lead to rationing medicines, ignoring abnormal glucose readings, or using another person's prescription.

Keep a record of meal timing, glucose readings, symptoms, and episodes of low blood sugar to share at diabetes visits. Inform the care team promptly if a serious infection, hospitalization, planned procedure, or prolonged poor food intake occurs. Do not assume diarrhea or bloating is always harmless; persistent symptoms can require review of dose, diet, concurrent medicines, or another gastrointestinal condition. Maintain the meal plan agreed with the diabetes team, and do not use dietary supplements or “blood sugar” products as replacements for prescribed care.

Routine diabetes care also includes attention to blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney health, feet, eyes, and vaccines as appropriate. Acarbose may be only one component of treatment, and its role can change over time. Carry a current medicine list and identify yourself as having diabetes when receiving emergency treatment. If glucose patterns become persistently above target, do not take extra acarbose independently; contact the clinician to assess adherence, food intake, illness, and the full diabetes regimen.

Interactions

Digestive-enzyme products containing amylase, pancreatin, or lipase may reduce acarbose activity and should not be used without clinical advice. Medicines that can increase blood glucose or alter diabetes control include corticosteroids, diuretics, thyroid hormones, some antipsychotics, certain seizure medicines, oral contraceptives and other hormones, stimulants, nicotine products, some cold or asthma medicines, and calcium-channel blockers. Digoxin levels may also require review. Every new medicine, vitamin, or herbal supplement should be checked by the prescriber or pharmacist.

Patients should buy Precose through a pharmacy that can review interactions and provide the correct glucose-treatment advice. Precose price is a practical matter for the pharmacy and care team, while insulin changes, meal planning, and diabetes treatment decisions must follow the prescriber's directions.
