Generic Prandin ( Repaglinide )
Prandin (Repaglinide) Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Safety and Interactions
Prandin is a prescription medicine containing repaglinide, a short-acting insulin secretagogue used to help lower blood glucose in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It stimulates the pancreas to release insulin in relation to meals. It is used alongside an individualized eating plan and physical activity, and it may be used with other diabetes medicines when a clinician determines that combination treatment is appropriate.
Diabetes care is individualized. Treatment decisions should take account of glucose readings, HbA1c, meal patterns, kidney and liver function, weight, cardiovascular risk, other medicines, and the person’s ability to recognize and treat low blood sugar. Prandin does not replace lifestyle measures or routine diabetes monitoring, and it is not an appropriate treatment for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Patients who have a valid prescription may buy Prandin from a regulated pharmacy. The Prandin price can vary with tablet strength, quantity, manufacturer, insurance, and pharmacy policies. Speak with a pharmacist or prescriber about affordability rather than skipping doses, splitting tablets without advice, or changing the treatment plan independently.
Indications
Prandin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It may be considered alone or with another glucose-lowering medicine, such as metformin, when clinically appropriate. It should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis. Symptoms of very high blood sugar, dehydration, vomiting, abdominal pain, deep rapid breathing, or confusion require urgent medical assessment rather than self-adjustment of tablets.
Regular follow-up is important because diabetes treatment should be based on measured results, not symptoms alone. The prescriber may review home glucose records, HbA1c, hypoglycemia episodes, nutrition, exercise, weight, kidney and liver function, and cardiovascular risk. Vision changes can occur when glucose levels change and should be discussed, especially if sudden, severe, or persistent.
Dosage
Take Prandin exactly as prescribed, generally within 30 minutes before meals. The medicine is intended to be linked to eating; if a meal is skipped, the corresponding dose is usually skipped to reduce the risk of low blood sugar. The starting dose and later adjustments depend on HbA1c, response, renal function, other medicines, and the risk of hypoglycemia. Do not increase, decrease, or take an extra dose on the basis of a single reading unless the clinician has provided a specific correction plan.
Prandin tablets are available in 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg strengths. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Prandin 0.5 mg when that strength matches the prescribed meal-time regimen. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Prandin 1 mg only as directed on the label. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Prandin 2 mg when it is the prescribed strength. The Prandin price of another tablet strength is not a reason to substitute it or alter the number of tablets taken.
If a dose is missed because a meal was missed, do not take it later. If you ate but forgot the dose, ask the prescriber or pharmacist for individualized advice; do not double the next dose. Keep glucose-testing supplies and a fast-acting carbohydrate source available if advised by the diabetes team. Store tablets in the original container as directed, protected from moisture and out of reach of children and pets.
Safety Information
Hypoglycemia is the most important risk. It may cause hunger, sweating, shaking, palpitations, headache, dizziness, irritability, weakness, blurred vision, confusion, unusual behavior, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Risk is increased by missed or delayed meals, unusually strenuous activity, alcohol, inadequate food intake, kidney or liver impairment, and use with other glucose-lowering medicines. Follow the diabetes team’s written plan for treating low blood sugar. A person who cannot safely swallow, is having a seizure, or loses consciousness needs emergency assistance.
Tell the prescriber about liver disease, kidney impairment, pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent surgery, severe infection, fever, injury, alcohol intake, and all medicines. Stress, illness, surgery, and steroid treatment can change glucose control and may require a temporary treatment adjustment. Do not use Prandin if you have a known serious allergy to repaglinide. Gemfibrozil must not be used with repaglinide because it can markedly raise repaglinide exposure and increase hypoglycemia risk.
Possible adverse effects include upper-respiratory symptoms, headache, joint or back pain, gastrointestinal upset, and changes in blood glucose. Seek prompt care for severe or recurring hypoglycemia, allergic symptoms such as swelling or breathing difficulty, jaundice, dark urine, severe abdominal symptoms, or marked changes in vision. Patients using Prandin with a valid prescription should not share it, even with another person who has diabetes.
Interactions
Prandin interactions can increase or decrease its glucose-lowering effect. Gemfibrozil is contraindicated. Clopidogrel can increase repaglinide exposure and requires careful prescriber management. Strong inhibitors or inducers of CYP2C8 or CYP3A4 may require dose modification or use of another therapy. Examples include certain antifungals, macrolide antibiotics, rifampin, carbamazepine, and some antiviral medicines.
Other diabetes medicines, alcohol, salicylates, some antibiotics, and medicines that mask warning symptoms of hypoglycemia, including some beta-blockers, can change risk. Corticosteroids, diuretics, thyroid medicines, oral contraceptives, sympathomimetics, and some antipsychotics may increase blood glucose and alter the treatment plan. Give every healthcare professional and pharmacist an up-to-date list of prescription medicines, supplements, and nonprescription products.
The Prandin price should not determine whether monitoring is reduced or whether a product is obtained from an unverified source. A pharmacist can help identify lower-cost, properly dispensed options while the prescriber retains responsibility for the regimen.
Medical disclaimer: This content is informational and does not replace advice, diagnosis, or treatment from a licensed healthcare professional.
