Mircette (Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Safety and Interactions

Mircette is a prescription combined oral contraceptive containing desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, with additional low-dose ethinyl estradiol tablets in its 28-day regimen. When taken consistently and correctly, it prevents pregnancy primarily by suppressing ovulation and also changes cervical mucus and the uterine lining. It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections; barrier methods are needed when infection prevention is required.

Combined hormonal contraception should be selected after an individualized clinical assessment. Important considerations include smoking, age, blood pressure, migraine history, blood-clot risk, heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, breast-cancer history, recent pregnancy, breastfeeding, and current medicines. Do not start, restart, or switch Mircette without consulting the supplied product information and the prescribing clinician.

Patients with a valid prescription may buy Mircette through an appropriately regulated pharmacy. The Mircette price may differ by product availability, generic equivalent, pack size, pharmacy, and insurance coverage. Cost should not lead to missed active tablets, using an unverified product, or changing to another contraceptive without professional confirmation.

Indications

Mircette is indicated to prevent pregnancy in people who elect to use an oral contraceptive and for whom this combined hormonal product is suitable. Effectiveness depends on reliable daily use. The product-specific 28-day pack contains different tablet types, so it must be taken in the exact order shown. A different tablet sequence can reduce protection and disturb the intended hormone schedule.

Mircette is not emergency contraception and does not treat a suspected pregnancy. Additional non-hormonal contraception may be needed during the first days of the first pack, after missed active tablets, after vomiting or severe diarrhea, or when taking a medicine that reduces hormonal contraceptive effectiveness. If pregnancy is suspected, stop the medicine and contact a clinician promptly.

Dosage

Take one tablet each day at about the same time, following the order printed on the package. Begin the next pack as scheduled. Do not skip tablets, extend the hormone-free interval, or take multiple tablets to compensate for uncertainty. The package leaflet provides product-specific instructions for starting treatment, delayed starts, missed tablets, and back-up contraception; use that guidance or contact a pharmacist promptly.

The standard Mircette regimen includes 21 tablets containing 0.15 mg desogestrel and 20 mcg ethinyl estradiol, followed by two inactive tablets and five tablets containing 10 mcg ethinyl estradiol. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Mircette 0.15 mg/20 mcg/10 mcg only when that exact 28-day regimen is prescribed. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Mircette 0.15 mg/20 mcg/10 mcg only as the labelled tablet sequence. The Mircette price of a different generic or pack does not establish equivalent instructions.

Missing active tablets raises pregnancy risk. If tablets are missed, follow the pack leaflet at once, use back-up contraception when advised, and consider emergency contraception if appropriate. If expected bleeding is absent after missed active tablets or pregnancy symptoms occur, take a pregnancy test and contact the prescriber. Record missed tablets, vomiting, and any back-up method used so the care team can provide accurate guidance.

Safety Information

Combined oral contraceptives can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. Cigarette smoking significantly increases this risk, especially after age 35; do not smoke while taking Mircette. It may be contraindicated in people with current or past thrombosis, stroke, coronary disease, uncontrolled hypertension, migraine with aura, diabetes with vascular complications, significant liver disease or liver tumours, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or hormone-sensitive cancer.

Seek emergency help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg pain or swelling, sudden severe headache, loss of vision, weakness or numbness on one side, speech difficulty, fainting, or severe abdominal pain. Contact the prescriber for persistent heavy bleeding, new or worsening migraine, jaundice, dark urine, depression, breast changes, or elevated blood pressure.

Common effects can include nausea, breast tenderness, headache, mood changes, fluid retention, and spotting, especially during the first months. Surgery, prolonged immobility, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and breastfeeding need individualized planning. Patients who buy Mircette with a valid prescription should use only their own labelled pack and keep it out of reach of children.

Tell the prescriber before planned surgery or prolonged reduced mobility, because temporary interruption may be appropriate to reduce clot risk. Blood pressure should be checked regularly. Do not continue a pack after a clinician has advised stopping it because of a serious adverse event, newly diagnosed contraindication, or confirmed pregnancy.

Bring the current pack and medicine list to every relevant appointment.

Interactions

Some medicines can lower contraceptive effectiveness, including rifampin or rifabutin, certain seizure medicines such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, and some topiramate regimens, selected HIV or hepatitis C treatments, and St John’s wort. A clinician may recommend a non-hormonal back-up method during the interacting treatment and for a defined period afterward.

Other medicines requiring review can include lamotrigine, cyclosporine, theophylline, corticosteroids, acetaminophen, and treatments for diabetes or high blood pressure. Give every clinician and pharmacist a complete medicine list. The Mircette price is not a safety measure and cannot replace a formal interaction check.
